Checklist for Flying with Pets on a Private Flight

November 25th, 2020 | Traveling Tips

For many of our guests, pets are part of the family. That’s why when you FlyUSA, they travel with you in the cabin. Your Advisor will help you with all of the documentation and pet travel guidelines, enabling you and your pet to arrive safe, comfortable and together.

Consider their comfort

It’s always helpful to bring along some of their favorite items. Whether it’s a blanket, stuffed animal or chew toy, these items will help soothe their anxiety and keep them happy throughout the flight.

We also recommend taking a walk with your pet before leaving home and even again before boarding the aircraft. A pre-flight ‘bathroom break’ will certainly make them more comfortable and could also save you an unnecessary cleaning expense.

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that you do not give tranquilizers to your pet when traveling by air because it can increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems.

In-flight safety

The FAA requires that all pets weighing over 150 pounds remain on the floor, while pets under 150 pound may occupy a passenger seat.

For everyone’s safety it is also a requirement that pets are secure in the cabin during taxi, takeoff and landing. Guide dogs are of course exempt.

Travel Documents

When traveling with your pet, there may be health requirements specific for your destination. A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CIV) is also called a Health Certificate and is a common requirement for intrastate travel. You can receive this document from your veterinarian which states that he or she has inspected the animal for diseases and overall health.

If you are traveling internationally, we recommend telling your veterinarian about the trip as soon as possible. Your destination country may have specific health requirements that need to be met before your pet can enter the country.

These requirements often include:

  • Blood tests
  • Vaccinations
  • Microchips for identification

FlyUSA’s team of Private Aviation Advisors are subject matter experts when it comes to pet travel regulations. We are always available to walk you through the requirements for each adventure.
